On Rhythm, Movement and Choreography

MA 01, MA 03, CuP 02, CuP 07, CuP 09

In the seminar we would like to examine the role of rhythm in contemporary choreography. Even if it seems that the body of contemporary dancer / performer resists the obedience and is liberated from the unison rhythmic patterns, rhythm is still a very powerful concept with which we can examine the polyphonic role of the body in performance. Rhythm is a complex problem, very much related to the organization of time, perception and attention, not only in performance but also in other cultural and social spheres of life. In the seminar we would like to examine different aspects of rhythm, especially disclosing how movement with its various rhythms can create tensions and connections with the temporal organization of life in contemporary world. How to think the movement in the relation to rhythm, especially when we think about polyphonic acceleration of movement patterns today? How to think about the role of rhythm in collaboration? How to describe the relation of rhythm to freedom and discipline? How does choreography organize attention through rhythm? How does rhythm experiment with temporality, not only temporality of performance but temporality of social life in general?
The seminar is related to the series of public lectures Ringvorlesung.
